Câu hỏi tường thuật bắt đầu bằng have, do, be

Cấu trúc

Dùng if hoặc whether để chuyển câu hỏi Yes/No sang câu tường thuật.

Công thức

S + asked + (O) + if/whether + S + V (lùi thì)

  • 'Have you been to the gallery?' → He asked her if she had been to the gallery.
  • 'Do you want a sweater?' → My mum asked if I wanted a sweater.
  • 'Are you making a skirt?' → I asked Anne if she was making a skirt.
Lưu ý

Không giữ trật tự câu hỏi trong câu tường thuật.

Câu hỏi tường thuật bắt đầu bằng động từ khuyết thiếu

Cấu trúc

Dùng if/whether và lùi thì động từ khuyết thiếu.

Quy tắc lùi thì:

  • can → could
  • will → would
  • shall → should
  • may → might
Ví dụ
  • 'Can you paint?' → Mary asked her friend if he could paint.
  • 'Will you make me one?' → I asked Terry if he would make me one.
  • 'Shall I wear a jacket?' → I asked Mum if I should wear a jacket.
  • 'May I borrow your coat?' → Mr Jones asked me if he might borrow my coat.

Câu hỏi tường thuật bắt đầu bằng từ để hỏi

Cấu trúc

Giữ nguyên từ để hỏi (what, who, which, when, why, how...) và đổi thành trật tự câu trần thuật.

Công thức

S + asked + (O) + từ để hỏi + S + V (lùi thì)

Ví dụ
  • 'What kind of shoes are in fashion now?' → My mum asked me what kind of shoes were in fashion at that moment.
  • 'Who did you see at the fashion show?' → Ben asked who I had seen at the fashion show.
  • 'Which one do you want?' → Sarah asked Liam which one he wanted.
  • 'When will they finish the house?' → I asked when they would finish the house.
  • 'Why did you say that?' → My sister asked me why I had said that.
  • 'How much did your hat cost?' → Ed asked Carl how much his hat had cost.
Lưu ý

Không dùng trật tự đảo ngữ của câu hỏi.

Câu mệnh lệnh tường thuật

Cấu trúc

Dùng told + O + to V (khẳng định) hoặc not to V (phủ định).

Công thức
  • Khẳng định: S + told + O + to + V
  • Phủ định: S + told + O + not to + V
Ví dụ
  • 'Put your clothes in the drawer.' → Mum told me to put my clothes in the drawer.
  • 'Don't wear the red one.' → Alice told me not to wear the red one.

Lời yêu cầu tường thuật

Cấu trúc

Dùng asked + O + to V (khẳng định) hoặc not to V (phủ định).

Công thức
  • Khẳng định: S + asked + O + to + V
  • Phủ định: S + asked + O + not to + V
Ví dụ
  • 'Will you make me one?' → I asked Terry to make me one.
  • 'Please don't move my pictures.' → Olga asked me not to move her pictures.
Phân biệt

Dùng told cho mệnh lệnh (orders), asked cho yêu cầu (requests).

Sử dụng whether thay cho if

Quy tắc

Có thể dùng whether thay cho if trong câu hỏi tường thuật Yes/No.

Ví dụ
  • He asked her if she had been to the gallery.
  • He asked her whether she had been to the gallery.

Cả hai cách đều đúng và có nghĩa giống nhau.

Lưu ý quan trọng về trật tự từ

Lỗi thường gặp

Không được giữ trật tự câu hỏi trong câu tường thuật.

Đúng

I asked when they would finish the house. (trật tự câu trần thuật)

Sai

I asked when would they finish the house. (trật tự câu hỏi)

Quy tắc

Sau từ để hỏi trong câu tường thuật, dùng trật tự: S + V, không đảo ngữ.
