Loại 0 và loại 1 — hai loại chiếm gần hết đề TOEIC

Loại 0 (quy định luôn đúng): If + hiện tại đơn, hiện tại đơn — If an order is placed before noon, it is dispatched the same day.
Loại 1 (điều kiện có thật ở tương lai): If + hiện tại đơn, will + V — If you place your order before noon, we will dispatch it today.

Không bao giờ dùng will sau if. Quy tắc này áp cho cả when, as soon as, until, before, after: as soon as the deposit is paid, không phải will be paid.

Liên từ điều kiện ngoài if

unless đã mang sẵn nghĩa phủ định nên KHÔNG thêm not: ❌ unless you do not provide.

Should you… — dạng trang trọng của loại 1

Thư thương mại thay If you should require… bằng cách bỏ if và đảo should lên đầu:

Should you require any further assistance, please contact our service desk.
Should the goods arrive damaged, please photograph them before signing.

Sau Should + chủ ngữ là động từ NGUYÊN THỂ trần, không chia.

were to — giả định trang trọng về tương lai

If + chủ ngữ + were to + V, would + V — dùng khi bàn một khả năng khó xảy ra:

If the supplier were to withdraw from the contract, we would need a replacement.

Dùng were cho mọi chủ ngữ, kể cả số ít.

Điều kiện hỗn hợp: quá khứ ảnh hưởng tới HIỆN TẠI

Vế if nói về quá khứ, vế chính nói về hiện tại — nhận ra bằng mốc thời gian LỆCH nhau trong hai vế:

If we had signed the contract last year, we would be in a much stronger position now.

So sánh với loại 3 thuần (cả hai vế đều quá khứ): If the machine had worked properly, we would not have lost two days.
